The Government of Alberta is currently re-writing the laws that govern education in our province. This gives Albertans the opportunity to consider and debate the future of Roman Catholic and Protestant separate schools. The government has not flagged this as an issue up for consideration, and so far all public consultations have steered clear of the topic. The Stelmach government has not tried to stifle this conversation, but they certainly haven't gone out of their way to start it.
That is why Albertans have to start the conversation themselves. The government cannot stop us from discussing the future of Roman Catholic and Protestant separate schools. And when Albertans have this conversation, they have to take it seriously. In the end, the government may ignore our petition and do nothing, but we shosuld not consider that a failure. At the very least, the issue will be on the public radar and Albertans will know how much their government listens to the public.
